In lieu of bifocal lenses my surgeon suggests one of each in cataract surgery will this work?
Question: I am 74 years old and have worn bifocal glasses for 36 years, I have cataracts in both eyes and am having surgery. I do not wish to spend $6000 for the bifocal lenses so the surgeon strongly recommends putting a distance lens in one eye and a reading lens in the other. I worry it won't work and once it is done, it is done. Has anyone had this done and how did it work?
Answer: I've met many who have had that done, and every one of them I have met, regret it. Either with implants after cataract surgery or with Lasik surgery which many laser clinics also push as a solution.
Not everyone can get used to that to begin with , and even those who can , still find that night driving is a nightmare after because they have lost depth perception.
Using just one eye for reading is also tiring much faster than when both are used.
There is much more pleasure in having good distance vision in both , and using reading glasses for near.
That is the same process we often try on people in their 40's called Monovision , with contacts lenses. Only about 40% are successful with it, during daylight hours but the vast majority of that 40% also find they can't wear the lenses like that ( one for near, one for distance) comfortably at night.
It must work for some people, but being irrreversable, personally, I wouldn't take the chance. With monovision in contacts, they just stop wearing them like that if it doesn't work.
Good luck with your choice. I have given you my experience with probably 50 or 60 patients over the last couple of years.

Bifocal Lenses?
Question: I had an eye appt. recently and was precribed bifocals for the first time (in my 40's). I also have high eye pressures. The doctor was very specific in that I should not wear no lines. He said I would only be able to use straight line 28's. I forgot to ask, but why do you think I might not be able to wear no lines?
Answer: its possible. not all Rx's can even be made in progressives (a good example would be "slab-off prism")

What's the differences between Bifocal lenses, progressive and trifocal lenses?
Question: my left eye is -2.5 and right eye is -2.25, and im planning to buy a pair of eyeglasses online, but not sure what kind of lenses i should pick? i really don't like the eyeglass frames in the stores!!
Answer: there are trifocal too?!?!

What company makes the best progressive eye wear (no-line bifocal) lenses?
Question: Trying to find reviews of the best progressive lenses for glasses and not having a lot of luck. Cost doesn't matter, I just want to have my vision back like it was before presbyopia. I don't like the narrow field of clear vision with cheap progressives.
Answer: Progressives are always going to be a compromise. There is no progressive on the market that will give as wide a reading area as a regular lined bifocal, or a full reading glass.
The most modern technologies now are the Free Form progressives, also known as HD lenses.
HD lenses can offer up to 30% wider intermediate and near vision than conventional progressives, regardless of the brand.
Every different lab gives their own Free Form lenses their own name but they are all made with the same technology. Each lens is custom made from scratch by computer to control the curvatures better at over 1000 points across the lens , and is different for every prescription , rather than having to use the fixed base curves of conventional progressive blanks.
So, if you want the best available now, ask your optician about their Free Form HD lenses.
The lab I deal with calls them the Personna , and my patients love them.

Is it damaging for a 16year old to have Bifocal lenses?
Question: i have a friend who is16 and she wants bifocal lenses. she currently has reading glasses and it annoys her and she often forgets to take them off when she looks away from the screen or page of a book/mag etc. She would like to know if its okay to get a pair of bifocals with NO CORRECTION in the top section of the lens and hr reading prescription in the bottom part? Would this be damaging for her? if so why?
thanks (:
Answer: Their is no reason why she should not do this. Another option of course would be for her to use small half moon reading lenses only aimed at her lower field of vision, which would work in the same way.
