what happens to contact lenses in cold weather?
Question: I have been wearing contact lenses occasionally for some time now and during the holidays I will be going to UK. the temperature can go to 0 there so can I wear contacts there? or will something happen to them in cold weather
I have two types of contacts: 1day acuvue moist and acuvue clear (monthly ones)
thanks in advance!
Answer: You aren’t going to have problems . i live in the UK and wear contacts regularly even in temperatures beneath 0 and with high wind chill. Your eyes actually keep your lenses warm. Sometimes cold will dry out your eyes more and it helps to have drops for contacts – any optiican in the UK will sell you something appropriate. dContacts are far better in this weather as glasses steam up when you come in from the cold. Really you’ve far more need to worry about colds at this time of year as they badly affect your contact wearing time and you need backup glasses. i’d also say that at this time of year you’re looking at sub-zero temperatures depending a bit on where exactly you’re going and what the weather does. We’ve certainly had first frosts. Have a nice trip although November ain’t a great month in the Uk….

Contact Lenses Help Me?
Question: I want to get contact lenses because i am extremely short sighted, My hands are blurred at 1.5 feet away the ones i saw were very expensive though e.g
£50 Startup (Teach you how to put on take off ect)
£35 Monthly Lenses
£7.50 A month after care
Total: £92.50 p/m (First month)
Total: £42.50 p/m (The rest of the months)
That for me is extremely expensive considering im 16..
Could someone please help me?
I live in London, UK
Answer: That is quite expensive but you are in london and london prices are high. I pay 25 pounds a month and 6 monthly exams on top – nothing like that sort of price. I would phone round and see what others offer. It is massively more than I pay but London prices are high. It is very sad that contacts are regarded as a luxury unlike other types of aid. They are wonderful but not cheap and I resent the fact that VAT is now put on glasses and contacts in the UK – this did not used to be the case. I think the cost of glasses and lenses is little discussed in spending priorities for the NHS whereas aids for other types of disability would become a scandal.

Are Biomedics 55 Evolution Contact Lenses the same as Coopervision’s “optionsuv” lenses ?
Question: For years I have happily used Coopervision’s Biomedics 55 Evolution monthly contact lenses . My optician told these are no longer sold as this brand and gave me a replacement lenses which are branded as “options UV ” also by Coopervision . He said they are the same lenses but they don’t appear to be the same to me as the specification deems to be different and I am also having problems with iritation and sight in one of my eyes with these new lenses . Does anyone know the truth ? I am in the UK . It appears that the Biomedics lenses are still being made and sold over the internet at least .
I am in the UK
Answer: We are still dispensing them here in North Carolina in the US, but I believe they are being phased out. Another one made by coopervision that is similar is the Frequency 55, or you may want to try Proclear. Tell your optician about your issues, frequently there are problems when switching brands, and they may have been trying to get you into what they felt was the closest and easiest to transition to for your requirements. We will try several brands at my office when there is a change that needs to be made to find the best new fit for a patient.
